Definition of the conjunction
The conjunction is the closest astrological aspect: it forms when two planets are at an angular distance of less than 8 to 10 degrees. In its purest form, both planets occupy exactly the same degree of the zodiac, fusing their energies inseparably. This proximity makes the conjunction the most intense and visible aspect in a birth chart.
Unlike other aspects, the conjunction has no fixed harmonic or tense nature: its quality depends entirely on the planets involved. A Venus-Jupiter conjunction will be beneficial and expansive; a Mars-Saturn conjunction, tense and demanding. That is why the conjunction is said to be neutral: it amplifies what it finds, without imposing its own tonality.
Types of conjunction
Conjunctions are classified according to the relationship between the planets involved. A conjunction between benefic planets (Venus, Jupiter) is called a benefic conjunction and usually brings facilities, gifts and opportunities. A conjunction between malefics (Mars, Saturn) generates tension, demand and internal work. When it combines a benefic with a malefic, the result is a mixture that requires conscious integration.
The orb also matters: an exact conjunction (same degree) is much more powerful than a wide conjunction (8-10 degrees of separation). Very tight conjunctions are considered stellar planets and are sometimes called cazimi when within 17 minutes of the Sun, a position of extraordinary strength. Finally, conjunctions to the lunar nodes have a karmic flavor that makes them especially significant in interpretation.
Examples of famous conjunctions
- Sun conjunction Moon: new moon, will and emotion aligned
- Venus conjunction Jupiter: generosity, abundance, artistic gift
- Mars conjunction Saturn: discipline, endurance, constructive tension
- Sun conjunction Mercury: mind and identity fused, possible cazimi
- Jupiter conjunction Saturn: great conjunction, 20-year cycle
The conjunction in your birth chart
To interpret a conjunction in your chart, first observe which planets are involved and in which sign and house the conjunction falls. The house indicates the life area where this fused energy manifests; the sign, the style with which it expresses itself. A Sun-Venus conjunction in House V in Leo, for example, will speak of an identity tinged by love and pleasure, expressed creatively and with a need to shine.
Pay attention also to the orb: a very tight conjunction (1-2 degrees) will be experienced as a dominant force in life, while a wide conjunction (7-9 degrees) will be more subtle. If there are three or more planets in conjunction, a stellium forms, a configuration that concentrates a large amount of energy in a single sign or house and usually marks a central theme in the native's life.

Whoever has an important conjunction in their chart feels the two energies as inseparable: they cannot experience one without the other. This is both a strength and a challenge. It is a strength because it gives an intensity and focus difficult to match; it is a challenge because the two energies may have contradictory needs and the person must learn to integrate them without repressing either.
The inner work with a conjunction consists of honoring both energies and finding their creative synthesis. For example, a Mars-Venus conjunction asks to integrate strength and sweetness, action and desire, conquest and enjoyment. When this integration is achieved, the person accesses a very powerful vital force; when not, they usually live one of the energies unconsciously and project the other onto others.
Practical interpretation
When interpreting a conjunction, always follow this order: identify the planets, observe the sign and house, evaluate the orb and the aspects the conjunction receives from other points in the chart. A Venus-Saturn conjunction in House VII in Capricorn with tight orb, for example, will speak of a partnership marked by commitment, seriousness and responsibility, with a strong karmic component.
Remember also that conjunctions indicate life principles that are learned to be integrated over time. In youth they tend to be lived in an unbalanced way —one energy dominates the other— and only with maturity is the synthesis achieved. That is why transits that activate a natal conjunction mark key stages of personal development: each time an outer planet passes through it, we are invited to deepen our integration of it.
