Astrological Houses

The 12 scenarios where your life unfolds. Each astrological house represents an area of experience where planets manifest: the self, resources, communication, home, creativity, work, partnership, transformation, travel, vocation, friends, and the unconscious.

What are the astrological houses?

Astrological houses are twelve divisions of the celestial sphere calculated from the exact moment and geographical place of birth. While planets represent energies or psychological drives and the zodiac signs describe how those energies express themselves, the houses indicate the area of life where they will manifest. That is why it is said that signs are the "how" and houses are the "where": a Mars in Aries speaks of action and impulse, but its concrete effect depends on whether it falls in house 2 (money), 7 (partnership) or 10 (career).

Unlike signs, which are governed by the movement of the Sun over the year, houses depend on the daily rotation of the Earth. That is why two people born on the same day but hours apart can have completely different house configurations, even if they share the same planetary position. The ascendant — the sign rising over the horizon at the instant of birth — marks the start of house 1 and determines the arrangement of the other eleven.

Each house rules a set of themes: house 1 describes identity and physical appearance; 2, resources and values; 3, communication and the immediate environment; and so on through to 12, linked to retreat, the unconscious and spirituality. Together, the twelve houses compose the complete map of human experience, from the most personal to the most transcendent. Understanding which planets dwell in each house, which sign sits on its cusp and which aspects it receives is the key to moving from a generic reading of the natal chart to a precise and personal interpretation.
