Planetary Aspects
The geometric angles between planets that shape your chart and bring it to life. The hidden geometry that turns a map of planets in signs into a living web of energies, tensions and talents.
What are astrological aspects?
Astrological aspects are the angles formed between two planets in the birth chart, viewed from Earth. When two celestial bodies are separated by a specific angular distance —0°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 150° or 180°— we say they are in aspect. Each angle produces a different quality of relationship: some unite and harmonise, others create tension and confrontation, others demand constant adjustment. The birth chart, far from being a static map of planets placed in signs, is above all a web of aspects that makes it alive.
For an aspect to be considered active, the actual distance between the two planets does not need to match the exact angle. There is a margin of tolerance called the orb: if the Sun is 88° from Mars, we still speak of a square (90°) within an orb of 2°. The strength of the aspect diminishes the further we move from the exact angle, but its nature remains. The tighter the orb, the more powerfully and clearly it manifests in a person's biography.
Aspects are divided into major and minor. The major ones —conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition and, by tradition, quincunx— are those that structure the personality and mark the principal axes of destiny. The minor ones —semisextile, semisquare, sesquiquadrate, lesser quincunx— add nuance and fine adjustments, but rarely define a chart. For this reason, this guide focuses on the six major aspects, the ones that truly matter when reading a chart.
Another fundamental distinction separates harmonious aspects (trine and sextile) from tense aspects (square and opposition). Harmonious aspects mark areas of fluency, innate talent and ease; tense ones, areas of inner conflict, challenge and growth. The conjunction and the quincunx are considered neutral: their effect depends entirely on the nature of the planets involved. A chart with only harmonious aspects would be comfortable but stagnant; a chart with only tense aspects would be exhausting but heroic. Real life, as always, lies in the balance.
