Definition of the sextile
The sextile is a harmonious astrological aspect that forms when two planets are exactly 60 degrees apart in the zodiac wheel. It is a major aspect, considered beneficial because it connects planets in signs of compatible elements —fire with air, or earth with water— allowing their energies to flow naturally. Its name comes from the Latin sextilis, 'sixth', as it marks one-sixth of the circle. Unlike the trine, the sextile offers opportunities that require initiative to be seized.
The typical orb of the sextile is narrow, 4 to 6 degrees at most, making it more selective than other major aspects. When the sextile is exact, its influence is clear and sustained; when wide, it manifests as a subtle tendency that accompanies without imposing itself. In practice, astrologers consider the sextile an aspect of opportunity: an open door that the person must decide to cross with their own will.
Types of sextile
Sextiles are classified according to the planets they connect and the elements involved. A sextile between benefic planets —Venus with Jupiter, or Mercury with the Sun— is considered a sextile of talent, as it facilitates natural gifts that the person can cultivate. A sextile between a benefic and a malefic —Venus with Saturn, or Jupiter with Mars— asks to integrate rigor with sweetness. The general rule is that the sextile softens what it touches without eliminating the proper tension of each planet.
The position in elements and crosses also matters. Fire-air sextiles (Aries-Gemini, Leo-Libra, Sagittarius-Aquarius) favor creativity, communication and social vision. Earth-water sextiles (Taurus-Cancer, Virgo-Scorpio, Capricorn-Pisces) sustain matter, sensation and emotional depth. Each compatible element pair gives the sextile a different flavor, and recognizing it helps refine the interpretation.

The sextile in your birth chart
To locate the sextiles in your birth chart, observe the lines that join planets separated by two signs —that is, 60 degrees—. Each such line indicates a sextile, and it is worth noting which planets it connects and in which houses each end falls. The house where the slower planet is placed usually indicates the area where the opportunity matures over time. The house of the faster planet, on the other hand, marks where the opportunity presents itself day to day.
When interpreting a natal sextile, always evaluate the orb and exactness. A tight-orb sextile (1-2 degrees) will be experienced as a constant gift; a wide sextile (5-6 degrees) will be a background current that appears at key moments. Remember also that sextiles do not act alone: they tend to group into larger configurations —such as talent triangles or Stars of David— that enhance their effect. The more sextiles a chart has, the more fluid and adaptable the person's life will be.

The dynamic of the sextile is that of latent potential: the two planetary energies are in tune, but they do not activate on their own. Unlike the trine, which operates automatically, the sextile needs the person to take the initiative. That is why many people with many sextiles in their chart feel they have untapped talents, doors they never quite crossed. The sextile is a promise that life fulfills only if invited to act.
When the sextile is activated —by transit, progression or conscious decision— the person experiences a sensation of fluidity and synchrony: things fall into place, the right people appear, opportunities knock on the door. It is important to learn to recognize these moments and respond to them with courage. Whoever has important sextiles should cultivate the habit of saying 'yes' to the invitations life makes, for each 'yes' activates a new circuit of energy.
Practical interpretation
When interpreting a sextile, follow this sequence: identify the planets and their nature (benefic, malefic, neutral), observe the signs and houses it connects, evaluate the orb and the aspects it receives from other points in the chart. A Sun-Jupiter sextile in Houses V-IX with tight orb, for example, will speak of a capacity to enjoy and expand through study, travel and the search for meaning. The person will find facilities to teach, publish or share their vision of the world.
Remember also that sextiles are activated especially through action, not through contemplation. A person with a Mars-Venus sextile may have a natural talent for seduction and art, but it will only bloom if they dare to create, to go out, to take risks in the affective terrain. In astrological practice it is recommended to work sextiles by seeking small challenges that set them in motion: each step taken in their direction activates their energy and reveals the gift that was latent.
